A、はい。

At our shop, our entire staff is dedicated to maintaining high standards—covering everything from cage size, sunbathing, and temperature control to soundproofing, nutrition, and hygiene—to ensure our chipmunks live in comfort.

We have held fast to the same sentiments since the day we opened: a desire to be with them for as long as possible, and the conviction that, because animals raised as pets cannot return to the wild, we must care for them responsibly and lovingly until the very end.

However, animals have shorter lifespans than humans, and the time for farewells inevitably arrives.

In recent years, the spread of social media has brought to light the "dark side" of the pet industry—aspects that were once known only through rumors.

As we do not sell live animals, I will refrain from commenting on the practice of animal sales itself. However, as a business involved in the pet industry, I believe we have a responsibility to explain the procedures regarding how deceased animals are handled.

If you have an interest in animals, you may have encountered rumors, whistle-blower reports, or articles claiming things like:

"They are disposed of as household trash after death."

"They are frozen and stockpiled, shipped in bulk via refrigerated transport, and incinerated all at once."

"At some animal cafes that sell live animals, when an animal dies due to negligent care, staff might lie and claim a 'new owner was found' to make it appear as though the animal was sold."

First-time visitors to our shop sometimes ask with concern, "What happens to the chipmunks here when they die?"

I would like to clearly explain our shop's policy regarding this matter.

At our chipmunk cafe, we handle the passing of an animal according to the following procedures:

On the day of death:

① Contact all staff members and gather together.

② Contact a pet cemetery (an affiliated temple) to arrange a funeral date.

③ Report the death to a veterinarian. For chipmunks with pre-existing conditions, we also consider performing a pathological autopsy.

④ Contact the artists who have entrusted us with their work for consignment sales. ⑤ Final farewells from the staff

⑥ Immediate transport to the memorial park’s mortuary facility for safekeeping until the funeral

⑦ Notification to the florist

⑧ Announcement to customers via social media

The Next Day — The Funeral

① The empty cage is left exactly as it is for 49 days; it is not cleared away.

② As many staff members as possible attend the funeral.

③ Final farewell, cremation, and the collection of the remains (bone-gathering ceremony)

④ Returning to the shop with the remains, we arrange a meal and hold a memorial gathering for all staff members.

After the Funeral

① We share details of their final moments so that customers can cherish the memories of that little one.

② Once the 49-day mourning period has passed, the remains (in their urn) are moved to the altar inside the shop. The nesting box used during their lifetime is not discarded but displayed in the shop.

Q: Doesn't holding individual funerals for each animal cost too much and prevent you from making a profit?

A: You are absolutely right. In fact, we often operate at a loss.

However, rather than chasing short-term profits, we believe that practicing "cradle-to-grave" care—and ultimately becoming a shop that customers can support with peace of mind—creates greater value in the long run.

While we are a for-profit business, profit is not our sole objective.

We operate with a constant focus on what is best for both our customers and the chipmunks themselves.

Furthermore, we take great care to ensure that our staff never find themselves unwittingly complicit in the "dark side" of the pet industry.

We strive to manage the shop in a way that ensures their time working here becomes a source of pride, rather than something they might later regret.

Thank you very much for reading to the end.

If you have the opportunity, please come and visit the chipmunks currently with us, as well as pay your respects to the spirits of those who have already passed on.
